12. SAMUEL - First son of Rev. Samuel (2) and Eunice (Brooks) Carter - b. 1-7-1678 - d. 8-30-1738 - m. Dorothy Wilder, dau. of Nathaniel and Mary Wilder - b. 1686

Samuel (12) with his brother Thomas (14) and possibly Nathaniel (52) moved with their families from the Woburn - Watertown area to the incorporated settlement of Lancaster which lies some 50 miles N.W. from Boston. This settlement was originally incorporated May 18, 1653 with nine families in it. Indian troubles in 1675 forced the abandonment of the town. 50 to 55 of its inhabitants had been killed or captured. Resettlement came from 3 to 5 years later.

Several Carters were among the new settlers. It is known that Samuel's family settled in the new section of Lancaster later known as Leominster. It was here that at least four of the sons secured farms from their father, having their pick according to age. These four were Nathaniel, Jonathan, Oliver and Josiah. Nathaniel settled on Bee Hill; Jonathan near Chualoom pond; Oliver and Josiah being on the south and north sides of Carter's hill. It is reported in Leominster Historical and Picturesque 1888 by Wm. Emerson as follows -- "These four brothers were of the 4th generation from Rev. Thomas Carter. From these, with but few exceptions, were descended all the Leominster Carters."
