Cornelius, known as "Squire," was born in Martinsburg, Lewis County, N.Y.
He was educated at Lowville Academy in 1842 - read law but never sought admission to the bar due to poor hearing.
He did however handle a good deal of legal business.
He taught school in N.Y. state and in Racine County, Wis.
His stay in Wisconsin was short.
He is known as a teacher and very close friend of the famous painter J. Henry Rushton.
He was recognized as an Adirondack guide, a poet, and a great friend of nature.
He served thirty years as Justice of Peace of Edwards, St. Lawrence County, N.Y.
