Hawley was born at Sechlerville, Wis. and attended school at Hixton.
Spent one year in the Agricultural Short Course at the University of Wis.
At 19 he directed his attention westward.
He lived in the Dakotas, for some years, farming there, then moved on to California where he raised his family.
He followed agriculture during his early years, but at Lindsay, calif. he was director caretaker of the state cemetery where he worked until retiring at 80 years of age.
