Irene grew up on the Cartter family farm in Jackson County, Wis.
Her education equipped her to teach piano and to carry on library administration.
The latter responsibility took her to Colfax, Wis. where she met Raymond Knapp whom she married later in Missoula, Mont.
She spent the remainder of her life there, her husband preceding her in death.
Both are buried at Missoula.
