Bruce grew up on the Cartter family farm in Jackson County, Wis. - received his high school education at Black River Falls and was graduated from the College of Agriculture at the University of Wis. with B.S. and M.S> degrees -
Served a short period in W.W. I entering an agricultural teaching and cooperative extension career in Marinette County, Wis. later joining the resident extension staff at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where he remained doing youth development and adult extension work until retiring in 1966.
His wife Elizabeth died September 12, 1957. She was the mother of his four children.
Bruce and Rachel spent the remainder of their lives traveling, with many trips overseas.
Being avid photographers, and educators at heart, they would present their travels in slide show form whenever they visited family members.
Towards the end of their lives, they split their time between their home in Madison and a winter home in Clearwater, Florida.
