James grew up on the Cartter family farm in Jackson County, Wis.
His education was received at Black River Falls and at the College of Agriculture in the University of Wisconsin at Madison.
At the latter he received his B.S. and M.S. degrees.
He was with the U.S. forces under Patton's command in his European campaign. Returning from service after his mother died, he moved his family to Madison where he finished his education and secured employment with Oscar Mayer Packing Company with whom he remained in continuous employment.
