He was born in Harrisville, Lewis County, N.Y. - was graduated from Cornell University at Utica, N.Y. with a law degree and set up his law practice at Clayton, N.Y. where he continued to live and practice.
His son, John, shared in the office.
He had been greatly interested in early history of the northern New York area, and is a collector of Indian and geological artifacts as well as books dealing with the Northern N.Y. and Great Lakes regions.
