A View From Tuesday

September 30th, 2008 . by cary

Before heading out this morning, I thought I would take a quick peek at the ol’ blogroll, and my first stop was over at BlackFive. Down the page a bit was a link to a NewYorkSlimes piece whining about the common sense that prevailed over the king’s ransom being handed out to failures. Story here.

This part of the story is what caught my eye, and is triggering a bit of a common sense rant:

Treasury Secretary Henry M. Paulson Jr., appearing at the White House late Monday afternoon, warned that the failure of the rescue plan could dry up credit for businesses big and small, making them unable to make payrolls or buy inventory.

Maybe I’ve been going about this “business owner” thing all wrong - I thought you bought inventory and paid wages out of the money you made from the service and/or product you provided? You know, collect on the invoice, turn around and pay your employees, buy more inventory, pay the utilities, and the leftover goes in the owner’s pocket or, if he’s smart, into a CONTINGENCY FUND for when someone doesn’t pay the invoice right away…

Obviously, I need to rethink my business model. I need to start “leveraging” my “receivables” and “monetizing” my “books” so I, too, can show false profits and qualify for a government handout.

It is obvious that I am involved in the wrong end of the business world. I need to get into the money supplying end of it, instead of the money using end of it.

Then again, what do I know? I’m just a red necked, bog dwelling hick with no formal ed-uh-muh-cay-shun. The fact that my business runs without a debt probably disqualifies me from belonging to the great herd at the public trough, anyway.

Red Friday

June 13th, 2008 . by cary

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Wearing my Lightning Sharp polo today - being all casual and what not.

You would have known this if you had listened to the show this morning - oh, wait, that’s right. I had connectivity issues and couldn’t host the show, so it was pretty much a bust.

Next time.

One of the things I was going to touch on on the show was the Supreme’s ruling that people don’t have to be citizens in order to be protected by this country’s constitution.

Great. Now all the illegals can claim rights under the constitution, since the Gitmo detainees have managed to weasel their way under it’s umbrella.

President Bush, it’s time to grow a pair - what, are you afraid your popularity rating will nosedive? You aren’t headed for another term in the White House, so what’s the harm? Cowboy up, Mr. President, and tell the Supremes they are WRONG to grant rights to non-citizens.

So, if you are a terrorist, fighting US soldiers, and are captured in the process of fighting US soldiers, and you are not wearing a uniform - it’s OK! Before, if the US had abided by the Geneva Convention, the detainee would have been executed in the field. Since that is distasteful to the liberals, the US afforded them protections under the Geneva Convention, by instead imprisoning them and granting them legal representation. Apparently that isn’t enough for the Justices Who Would Be Kings, and now these non-citizens, held for participating in non-uniformed acts of aggression on uniformed members of a recognized, standing army, have all the same rights and privileges as any citizen of the United States under the constitution.

Fantastic. Annie, get your gun.

Illegal Immigrants and Self-Deportation

June 10th, 2008 . by cary

I have been thinking on this subject for a while; I had been noting the changes here in Arizona as the sanctions law went into effect and wondered if the rest of the nation was taking note.

One of the biggest obstacles to ridding the country of illegals, or so the left would tell you, (and, by extension, the best reason for granting amnesty to these lawbreakers) is that we can’t deport them all. Well, actually, we don’t have to. If the nation were to take on the task of actively deporting the illegals, it would cost hundreds of thousands, possibly millions, of dollars - money that could be much better used elsewhere.

My buddy Gawfer pointed me to this article on The Loft. In particular:

That’s right…. by simply enforcing immigration laws and penalizing employers for hiring illegal aliens, the numbers of illegal aliens went DOWN. Does this mean they all left the country and returned home? No, of course not. Some probably did, while others went to another area of America where laws are not respected or enforced.

I’ll tell you this, from first-hand observation: the traffic levels are lowering. There are fewer Mexican plates on vehicles on the street. There aren’t the crowds outside the home improvement warehouses that there once were, although there are still the hangers-on. And, stats do show that there are fewer car-jackings and ID-jackings going on.

And, while the majority of these invaders may have gone back to Mexico, a good number of them, still trying to force their way into the American Cream, have gone to other states where the sanction laws have been either not put in place yet, or, if they have, activist judges are trying to knock them down. Arizona’s laws are facing the Supremes soon, followed closely by other states (Oklahoma, for one) and the Arizona ruling is expected to set a precedent.

Now, if only the Career Politicians would get a clue, and realize that We the People want secure borders and enforced laws…

I know, but I can dream, can’t I?

Wednesday Funny

April 30th, 2008 . by cary

This Wednesday funny is brought to you by my cousin, J, who got it from his brother, T, who is an active-duty LT in the Navy. T, thank you for your service and your sense of humor.

Gotta love Texans
So this Department of Water Resources representative stops at a Texas ranch and talks with an old rancher. He tells the rancher, “I need to inspect your ranch for your water allocation.”

The old rancher says, “Okay, but don’t go in that field over there.”

The Water representative says, “Mister, I have the authority of the Federal Government with me. See this card? This card means I am allowed to go WHEREVER I WISH on any agricultural land. No questions asked or answered. Have I made myself clear? Do you understand?”

The old rancher nods politely and goes about his chores.

Later, the old rancher hears loud screams and spies the Water Rep running for his life and close behind is the rancher’s bull. The bull is gaining with every step.

The Rep is clearly terrified, so the old rancher immediately throws down his tools, runs to the fence and yells at the top of his lungs…..

“Your card! Show him your card!”

Rules Without Enforcement = $$$

August 3rd, 2007 . by cary

I have mentioned on occasion the fallacy of having rules (or laws) without enforcing them. At one time, I was on the verge about ranting how Congress (opposite of Progress) was enacting new laws, but not making provisions for enforcing them.

A perfect example has popped up in my own backyard. Actually, it’s in the street, but you get the idea.

Missouri Avenue, an arterial between 75th Ave. and 67th Ave. here in Glendale, has a speed limit of 25 miles per hour. This is a residential street, with houses, a park, and an elementary school located along the right of way. The police presence here is abysmal, at best. I have seen patrol cars enforcing the speed limit twice in the seven years I have traveled this stretch of Missouri Avenue.

About a month ago, there were survey hoses stretched across the street. My guess is they were seeing what the average speed was. Since most of the people traveling that stretch of road know there aren’t any policemen enforcing the 25MPH sepp limit, the average speed was probably up around 40. I have been passed on that street many times, usually because I am traveling the speed limit and the ones passing me are much more important and need to get where they are going.

Two weeks ago, markings appeared on the pavement. Two lines, curb to curb, with the letters “H M P” spray painted between. This tells me the city, in it’s infinite wisdom, has decided that instead of enforcing the speed limit, it is going to force everyone to slow down to 20 MPH to go over these speed humps. Based on the model of the exiting speed humps on 73rd Ave., these speed humps will be state-of-the-art, with emergency vehicle breaks in the middle. That’s right, the speed humps will stretch curb to curb, except there will be two breaks the width of a vehicle centered in the middle for firetrucks and ambulances to not be hindered.

One problem: the speeders, who have not been held responsible for breaking the speed limit, will now feel that they can use the EV breaks for themselves. And they will, based on the model of 73rd Ave.

To review: The law-abiding drivers will be slowed down below the 25 MPH limit to negotiate the humps. The law-breaking drivers, who are speeding, will cross the center line to use the emergency vehicle breaks and continue speeding.

I feel so much safer already.

Because the city will not (or cannot) enforce the speed limit, it is forcing itself to spend money on installing speed humps that are not really speed humps so much as slalom courses. The speeders will still speed, and the non-speeders will be slowed down. Money spent, no revenue from the speeders held accountable for breaking the law, and more inconvenience for the rest of us.

Good move, Glendale Arizona!

I believe the first thing that needs to happen is a moratorium be put into place regarding any new law that proposes to “beef up” an existing law. Enforcement of the existing law must be proven for a six month period, and, if the problem has not improved, then the stiffer law may be introduced.
