Working today, joining the ranks of a particular Bullseye-themed store by wearing a red polo to work. No, I haven’t changed jobs, I’m still at the best toy store in the valley, but wearing red.

Don’t forget to thank a Vet for their service!

Pearl Harbor Day, 2010

December 7th, 2010 . by Cary

Please take this day to at least remember, if not personally thank, those who gave all or stood tall on that Day of Infamy, 69 years ago today.

But you better hurry – the Pearl Harbor Survivors, a fraternity that started out 18,000 strong, is down to 3000 members, mostly in their eighties and nineties. They are consolidating their divisions from eight to four. And their stories are dying with them.

Insomnia

December 6th, 2010 . by Cary

I’ve been having a recurring dream over the last several nights. In the middle of the night (in my dream, not necessarily by the clock) I am awakened by the scratching of a dog on the bed – their signal that they want to get up on the bed with us, but don’t want to upset anyone already on the bed. I can’t open my eyes, I can’t move, I can’t get up – but I can tell, I know, that it is Sara. And I can’t get up to get her on the bed. This alternates with a dream that Sara is scratching at the back door and I can’t get up to let her out.

And I physically wake up, and miss her, and can’t get back to sleep for a while.

Friday!

It’s a rare day off, now that I live in the land of retail. Of course, since I have the day “off” I’ll be pretty busy – two doctor visits (one to straighten me out, one to help me see straight) and three chairs to rebuild and two valances to get worked on and a motor to get rewound …

Ever need to get back to work so you can relax?

Driving Me Crazy … part whatever

December 1st, 2010 . by Cary

I was unpacking freight today, outside the back door of the store, when a couple (who happen to be regular customers) pulled into the parking lot. He was driving (?), looking at his “Smart” phone, and carrying on a conversation with his wife. No distractions there, right?

Did I mention they are both deaf and communicate with each other by American Sign Language? How’s that distraction thing working now?

On my way home tonight, I was at the light on Shea at Tatum. I was in the left hand lane, since I need to turn left at the 51 and don’t like to fight my way over at the last minute. I also happened to be pulling my trailer, since I had delivered the last of the milling wood to the railroad club today. ANYway, sitting there in the lane, just where the turn lane starts to widen out into the median, and a “Smart” car pulls out of the shopping center at Tatum and Shea, pulls in behind me, and then starts to inch up along side my trailer in order to get to the turn lane. No, I haven’t moved. No, there’s not really enough room to do that. When the light turned green, I “accidentally” swerved a little to the left so the “Smart” car had to stop before they could continue on into the turn lane. What was the hurry? They would just have to sit at the light for the full cycle anyway…

While I’m on the subject of bad driving, I would just like to point out that the lever on the left side of your steering column is called the turn signal lever – at least on most US-style vehicles. May I respectfully point out that it’s not giving up any secrets when you use your turn signals – it’s just polite to give the rest of us some kind of warning before you vacate your lane and try to take up residence inside my wheel well …
