Separation of Powers
August 1st, 2013 . by CaryIn spite of what many may think, there is no clause regarding the separation of church and state in the founding documents. In supporting documents, Thomas Jefferson and many others have expounded on the importance of not allowing religion to take over the administration of the country, but in the founding documents themselves it merely says that the government shall not create or promote on religion over another.
In other sections, the importance of having separate areas of power, or responsibility, is also expounded at length. Which brings us to today’s quote:
“In the first place, it is to be remembered, that the general government is not to be charged with the whole power of making and administering laws: its jurisdiction is limited to certain enumerated objects, which concern all the members of the republic, but which are not to be attained by the separate provisions of any.”
–James Madison, Federalist No. 14, 1787
