April 28th, 2009 . by CaryI did remember to actually use the camera I take along with me to jobs; this time I even took photos in process. The first project of the day was to build up a section of floor to be used as a dais, or stage, in the new gameroom:
With 2×6 joists on edge, on 16″ centers, and 3/4″ (OK, it’s actually 23/32″) plywood, it was pretty fast going and the stage was built within an hour:
When the flooring is installed, the stage will be finished.
The next project was the ceiling line – you know, where the wall meets the ceiling. It was pretty plain:
Corner blocks in all four corners:
Starting in one corner and working all the way around the 2000 square foot room, the crown moulding went up quick and easy, with the help of one of the guys from church:
And the finished product:
Today, once the Pastor finishes some personal chores, we will be installing the rest of the light fixtures. Again, pictures to follow.
Chat ya later…

Look ing gooood!
Thanks, Joe!
Nothin’s cheap anymore, so the expense of putting up the crown moulding would be something many would skip, but WOW, what a nice change it makes!
The change in appearance is dramatic, at the least. Sure fancies up the room.
Full disclosure time:
The gun I used to attach the crown moulding malfunctioned. The last piece installed (on the right of the corner block in the last picture) didn’t get any pins for the last three feet. When I had put it up, the fit was such that the crown stayed in place – it was that close. Overnight, the wood relaxed, and when I got there yesterday afternoon, the piece had come away from the wall, revealing the lack of nails.
Last night, I took the gun apart, and sure enough, a nail had sheared in the hammer mechanism, which prevented any following nails from feeding into position. I’ll be going out there this afternoon to finish the attaching.
Being able to build things with your hands and physically see the fruits of your labors — that is a blessing unto itself.
BZ
Indeed it is, BZ – which is why I suck at sales – there is no physical evidence of progress, so discouragement sets in. Woodworking, though – you can SEE what you have accomplished at the end of the day.
I LOVE molding!
Me, too, Jenn – I’m glad the decision was made to put some in the gameroom. Breaks up the ten foot ceilings, you know?
Hmmm…. I’ve got a small job for ya. 🙂 Just ripping carpet, replacing the floor, and laying tile. What’cha charge for a side trip to Podunk, TN?
Looks beautiful Cary!!!
Kate: For you, special deal – gas, keep me fed, have a place for me to lay my head, and $500 – and I’ll be a tile-layin’ fool for ya. I’ll even bring my own tools!
Sues – Thank you!
Well, dang. That food business might be a deal breaker. LOL Although, when ya find out that the reason we have to replace the wood is cuz of an old, sick cat, ya might rethink it all together. Heh.
Old, sick cat? Have I mentioned that my sense of smell was pretty much wiped by smoking?
How do you think I manage to drive some of these cabs? 😛
Hmmm….. Well now….that’s a tiger with different stripes. Heh. I shouldn’t be able to smell anything either, but….
