Monday-ish

December 21st, 2009 . by Cary

My phone woke me up this morning. The number was identified as coming from my mother’s house. It’s still dark out, I don’t know what time it is, Mom’s health is not the best, and my phone is ringing. That usually adds up to only one thing.

Except this time, it was my mother calling, wondering if I knew where my older brother was. Seems his house phone went to the recording that says “The number you have dialed is no longer in service. Please check the number … ” and my mother tried information with the almost predictable result of “No information for that name.” So, naturally, she woke me up to see if I knew where my brother was. I live in Glendale, Arizona, and he lives in the Salt Lake City area, so yeah, sure, we see each other EVERY DAY.

I promised her I would see what I could do. I needed to call him and wish him a happy birthday anyway. I dialed his number and he answered. I wished him a happy birthday, and then explained the reason for my call. “Yeah” he said, “I had to have the house phone disconnected. We’re running through a rough spot. Seems no one wants to hire an accountant with gray hair.”

“Grecian Formula” I helpfully suggested.

“You know that’s not me” he replied.

I asked him to call Mom so she wouldn’t worry. He promised he would.

I still don’t like calls in the dark of the night.

Chat ya later…

I’m with you on the late/early calls man. Were it not for the fact that work needs to be able to call, I’d shut the sucker down every evening…
There’s just no news that cannot wait until after the second cuppa.
You’re underemployed. Now we add your brother to that list. My son just got another job which requires a considerable move, and may not last for more than a year. I’m sure the nation has passed through times like these before, but not in my lifetime.
(And I think it will get MUCH worse before it improves.)
I’m glad your scenario turned out to be a relative false alarm.

    Hope Bubba’s situation also improves.

It will, in fact, get MUCH worse – most of us will be serving time for not “buying” the “health insurance” the “government” is foisting upon us.

I’m glad it was a relative false alarm also.

Those calls in the middle of the night can be scary. Glad it was nothing dire.

Nothing dire, no. But hey, Joe? Your prayers would be appreciated nonetheless.

OK, I must be dense…so please pardon the dust and confusion…

How can you call your brother if your mom couldn’t if the phone was disconnected? If it was a work phone, couldn’t she have called him at work?

Sorry for the confusion – I could call him because I have the super secret cell phone number.

Communication is not my family’s strong suit. There are times when we don’t communicate often enough, and other times when we don’t want to hear from … certain … members of the family. My older brother and my Mom don’t see eye to eye on a lot of issues. Brother had not shared his cell phone number with her, but had shared it with me (we’re close that way); so I could get hold of him when she couldn’t.

On the other hand, if he hadn’t answered the cell phone, the next call would have been to his town PD for a welfare check.

Glad to hear it turned out ok. I hate those late/early calls too. When the phone rings like that, I always expect the worst.

Especially in your line of work, Sues.

Underemployed. BOY do I know that one. I HATE late/early calls, they usually mean something bad.

    Merry Christmas Cary!

You know you have my prayers!
    MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Thanks for the clarification. I know the problems of families not seeing eye to eye firsthand. You’re not the only one that seems to play peacemaker all the time.

May you and your family have a Blessed and Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year.

Merry Christmas to you, too, Jenn, Joe, Tom, and anyone else who wanders in here while I’m away from the keyboard!
