Lookie What I Saw
April 21st, 2008 . by CaryThis particular bomber was delivered to the Army Air Corps in 1945, but never saw combat. It was, however, fully fitted with all gun positions, and a rack of (dummy, I hope) bombs in the bomb bay.
It was really great for a history hog like me to be able to visit an old bird like this. I look forward to other tours, and will share them with you.
Thank you for stopping by, God bless you all, Wear Red on Fridays, and support Warriors for Innocence!
HA!
I remember those 250lb’ers. We used them to decorate the interence to the Quarter Deck at NAS’s.
The definition of an explosion:
A loud noise followed by a rapid going away of things.
They were used to decorate a lot more than quarter decks when this bird’s older siblings flew! They decorated the German countryside and some Japanese islands quite bit, if my history is correct…
My grandad was a B-24 bombadier. Flew the Ploesti campaigns, got shot down over Vienna, and spent a year under as a POW with the Nazis until they were liberated.
Needless to say, I’ve always been partial to the 24 over the 17. The 17 always gets all the press!
Your grandad is a member of the greatest generation. If he is still around, would you let him know that I appreciate what he did, thank him for his service, and let him know that this younger Marine salutes him? If not, then know that his kind will always be remembered.
Thanks for stopping by, Danny.
