Monday Update

June 9th, 2008 . by Cary

So, how was your weekend?

My Saturday post (just below this one) was written Friday afternoon, and set up for publication by way of the delayed posting ability in WordPress. Pretty cool feature. Almost worth paying hosting fees right there…

Speaking of hosting fees, don’t send any to StartLogic. They don’t seem to think that their users can and would be an accurate early warning system for impending failures. I can’t be nearly as eloquent as Texas Fred on this subject, so I will direct you to a post of his that really covers it.

I am really, really regretting going with them – even though it was on the word of a trusted adviser – since not just this site is on StartLogic, but also the site for the non-profit Black Canyon Railroad Corporation, of which I am a member and the webmaster. Down time can only hurt exposure, not help it.

Saturday the seventh was my Mother’s 80th birthday. Happy Birthday, Mom.

Yesterday (Sunday the eighth), I had another migraine. This one hit hard and fast – right when I sat down after praise and worship, communion, and the offering (being in leadership, I was involved in all three). I tried to hide it, and just Marine my way through the service – but TMBWitW figured out real quick that I wasn’t praying silently but nearly writhing in pain with my eyes closed. She insisted we go home immediately. I took a migraine pill and went into hibernation mode – door closed, pillow over the head blocking sound and light – and slept for about six and a half hours. Woke up a bit groggy, but able to function.

For some reason, TMBWitW thinks that two migraines inside a week is cause for alarm, and that I should see the doctor about it. With a persuasive argument like that, I couldn’t help but be on the phone with the doctor’s office as soon as they were supposed to open. (0900) At 0915, they still hadn’t taken the answering machine off of weekend mode, so I left a message on the appointment line. Oh well. We’ll see where this goes.

OK – if you are eating anything while surfing this entry, you may want to either check out some blogroll activity, or go over to comics.com for a minute.

If you are still reading, then I am going to assume that you have a stomach that can handle what I’m about to write.

As my four or five regular readers know, I have five dogs. Lately, the weather has been warming up to the point where being outside after, say, 0730 is just uncomfortable. Not unbearably hot, but enough to make yard work unappealing. I haven’t been getting up and going outside early enough to get any yard work done before 0730 for about a month.

So – doing the math, my normal 1/2 – 3/4 bucket’s worth of yard apples has been building up a bit. Today I picked up four buckets, some of it still fresh, and I have more to go – but the rest will have to wait until tomorrow morning. I’m not going to deal with that stuff in the heat and direct sunlight if I can help it. The pick-up pattern is to stay just inside the shadow of the house as the sun rises, so you gotta move fast if you want to be efficient and stay out of the sun.

I’ve been hoping that the constantly rising price of gasoline would finally silence the liberals who say that we are in the middle east to steal the oil over there – but it doesn’t seem to be so. They are still claiming we are trading blood for oil – are they not seeing the prices going up, or are they still the clueless individuals they always were?

Never mind, rhetorical question.

Well, MEG is awake. The first thing she wanted to do was watch the “wawas”. Now she is watching Lilo and Stitch, and eating her morning waffle. I’m going to wrap this up now and start going about my business.

Ya’ll have a good Monday (if that is possible) and I will keep you posted on the migraine thing, OK?

Update:

I have an appointment for 0800 Thursday morning. Yes, Loon, I will be a good Marine and actually go to the appointment. 🙂

Thank you for stopping by, God bless you all, listen to The O Word on BlogTalkRadio, Wear Red on Fridays, and support Warriors for Innocence!

Cary, there is a time to “”Marine Up”” and a time to go to the doctor.

Glad to know that little MEG is continuing with the best morning routine that I have ever known……….WAWA’s, Lilo and Stitch, and waffles………..what could be better?

    Please take care.

  2. comment number 2 by: cary

Yes, Ma’am. Please see the update.

Her morning routine is pretty darn pleasurable – for her. I can only take so much wawas. I try to distract myself from them by playing minesweeper while she is watching them.

Frequent headaches are not to be ignored, I don’t care if you suffer from migraines or regular headaches. I’m glad you are getting a checkup.
I look forward to an update.

    You’re right, I shouldn’t ignore them.

It’s that Marine in me, that doesn’t like to show weakness…

I hate to break it to you like this, but BLOGSPOT allows you to post FORWARD a day as well, or correct that decision.

When I’m physically gone from my blog, I like this feature.

Otherwise I simply post ahead as necessary.

And I STILL DON’T PAY A THING FOR BLOGSPOT.

Hi Cary! Look at you old timers with your fancy shmancy webpages. I thought it’s supposed to be my generation that’s web savvy? You and Greybeard put me to shame. Seriously though nice webpage. I’ll support your talk radio when I can as well.

Second hope your headaches don’t bother you too much. I hate those!

Third thank you for your service.

So let me ask you, why does Jesus condone killing infidels?

    Luke 19:27 (see 19:11-27)

“But those enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them – bring them here and kill them in front of me.”

You would think this came from the Koran but what a shock to see it from the good ol holy bible. Seems a bit radical don’t you think?

You’re right about one thing if J.C. ever came back from the dead he wouldn’t run as a Democrat because the Democratic Party would label him a radical as well..

  7. comment number 7 by: cary

BZ – you re absolutely correct. I am guilty of forgetting the times I had posted ahead while still on Blogspot.

  8. comment number 8 by: cary

Rodolfo – thanks for stopping by.

Yes, sometimes the old dogs can learn new tricks. Or, is it a case of the old dogs taking back what they started in the first place? I’ve been involved in computers since 1981, in one capacity or another. This XHTML is pretty cool; having a nice software package like wordpress is even cooler. More cool. Whichever.

Migraines suck, there is no two ways about that.

You are welcome, it was my pleasure and my duty.

Luke 19:11-27 is the parable of the talents. Jesus is not the one who has demanded that his enemies be brought before him and killed, the hard master who left to be declared king (while leaving his servants in charge of various amounts of his holdings) is the one who demanded that the ones who had opposed him being named king be put to death.

Don’t confuse the lesson with the teacher.

Glad to hear you are going to the doctor Cary. They have meds now that will help to prevent migraines. Very cool stuff. Hang in there and I too look forward to your update.

  10. comment number 10 by: Samantha West

Cary, keep us up to date on your doctor’s visit!

  11. comment number 11 by: cary

Sues: I am glad to hear they have mads to prevent. So far all I’ve ever been given are meds to control the pain, provided you take them right when the pain starts. Yeah – like I can race to the medicine cabinet when the pain strikes.

Samantha: You betcha. Keep an eye here.

  12. comment number 12 by: Rodolfo

Sorry man I still don’t get it. This passage reads to me as Jesus metaphorically describing the *kingdom*. But metaphorical or not I don’t see how any justification of the murder of infidels is noble in any way. Perhaps you can argue (and correctly so) that this is not Jesus himself but the fact that he uses hate speech to make a point in truly radical.

  13. comment number 13 by: cary

As long as you continue to use the phrase “infidels” in relation to Jesus, you will not get it.

There are those who follow Him, and those who refuse to see His sovereignty. Those who refuse to see will never be reached, as their hearts have been hardened. The truth is inside you, and refusing it is the same as rejecting Jesus Himself.

Sorry, bud, can’t help you there.

  14. comment number 14 by: Debbie

There are excellent new meds for migraines. I hope you get an accurate diagnosis and something to fix you up.

  15. comment number 15 by: cary

Thanks, Debbie. I hope so, too.

    Thank you for stopping by.

  16. comment number 16 by: Rodolfo

Well I don’t think we’re allowed to change definitions midstream are we? How do you define an infidel? You’re an infidel in they eyes of Muslim theology and they’re infidels with respect to your theology. You can’t choose when or how to use the word because infidel is a universal word.

  17. comment number 17 by: cary

Yes, I am a proud infidel in the eyes of the islamic faith.

People who do not believe in Jesus are not “infidels” as defined by the islamic faith, they are, simply, the unbelievers, or the lost.

Quick side note – you might want to see how Christians are taught to treat unbelievers, or the lost, as opposed to how islam teaches to deal with the infidel.

  18. comment number 18 by: Gawfer

“…the fact that he uses hate speech…”

Interesting liberal phrase coming from an interesting liberal. There is no ‘hate speech’. Christ was simply referring to a ruler that was known to be ‘hard’, and made the point that we are all accountable for the things we have been given. if we allow those things to wither and die, then we will be judged for our laziness.

  19. comment number 19 by: cary

    Good point, Gawfer.

Also, a good quick teaching on that parable.

Thanks for piping in with that…

  20. comment number 20 by: Rodolfo

    Infidel defined:
    –noun
    1. Religion.
    a. a person who does not accept a particular faith, esp. Christianity.
    b. (in Christian use) an unbeliever, esp. a Muslim.
    c. (in Muslim use) a person who does not accept the Islamic faith; kaffir.

    source: dictionary.com

Call it what you want. The reality is that Muslims are infidels when viewed through Christian lens.

Gawfer-You can brush out the hate speech portion of that parable all you want but the killing of infidels is acceptable in the eyes of our Lord.

  21. comment number 21 by: cary

Call it what you want – the majority of Christians I have ever met do not use the word “infidel” since it has such strong anti-christian connotation.

  22. comment number 22 by: Rodolfo

I believe what you say regarding the majority of Christians not using that word. But the facts don’t lie. Everyone is one form of infidel from a different cultural group’s perspective. The fact that Christians don’t use it as much as Muslims don’t change the definition of it.

  23. comment number 23 by: cary

I’ll give you that. The definition doesn’t change.

  24. comment number 24 by: Greybeard

So Rodolfo, would you also agree that
“Once a Muslim, always a Muslim?”

  25. comment number 25 by: Rodolfo

Yes and no. I mean take me for example. I grep up on an island and I consider myself Pacific Islander or simply Guamanian. Now I’m also an American. Yet when I go home and bbq with friends and family I feel Guamanian. I don’t lose my American but I don’t deny my cultural island upbringing either.

I have neighbors in my apartment who are of Pakistani descent but still consider themselves Muslim despite being non-religious. In other words I think Muslim is more a cultural expression as opposed to Islam which carries a religious connotation.

It’s kinda like how many people refer to Barry as the black candidate but technically he’s multi-racial. So who draws the distinctions? Are people simply applying the one drop rule?

Now if you’re referring to apostasy then that’s a whole different story. We all know what some fundamentalists do to someone who changes faith. Do I agree with that? No because that practice is outdated and conflicts with modernity.

  26. comment number 26 by: cary

Rodolfo: Your “Guamanianism” is a race or in-born thing.

islam/muslim is a religious choice. islam is muslim, muslim is islam. You cannot take the muslim out of the islamic person, nor can you take islam out of a muslim. It is the same thing. However, you can take both islam AND muslim out of the person, and that person is apostate to the believers of islam. You cannot take you Guam-ness out of you, no matter how hard you try. It is part of your being, it is where you were born, and it will be with you forever. You had no choice in the matter, and you can deny it all you might want to, but you will be Gaumanian for the rest of your life.

As far as Obama, HE is the one who declared himself to be a black candidate; I’m still trying to figure out if he’s a black man with a white mother or a white man with a black father.

  27. comment number 27 by: Rodolfo

I’m no so sure about that Cary. There are many non-religious Muslims who don’t practice Islam the same way there are many Jews who don’t practice Judaism. For them it’s a cultural thing. Ya I’ll always be Guamanian I guess. It’ll always be a part of me. But what matters in my book is what your citizenship papers say. Every Guam citizen is an American citizen therefore saying they’re Guamanian doesn’t really amount to much. They’re Americans first whether they like it or not. But do baptism papers count? I was baptized under the Catholic Church but I don’t consider myself Catholic anymore. There was no process of ex-communication (I wish then it would be official) so am I still considered Catholic? It’s a sticky mess and I don’t think there’s anything definitive. My secular Jewish friends say because their mom is Jewish they’ll forever be Jewish yet I think it’s hypocritical for someone to call themselves Jewish if they don’t practice their faith. But they say they can say it because it’s more cultural and not religious. I don’t know man.

So can a Muslim be Muslim without Islam? Depends on who you ask I guess.

If I decide to move to Canada tomorrow and change my papers does that mean I”m not American anymore despite my views on freedom? So in the end I think there’s a distinction between cultural/heritage vs religious/secular identification.
