Power Without Right

August 20th, 2013 . by Cary

“A Constitution is not the act of a Government, but of a people constituting a government, and a government without a constitution is a power without right.”

–Thomas Paine, Rights of Man, 1791

Time To Contract

August 13th, 2013 . by Cary

“There is not in the whole science of politics a more solid or a more important maxim than this — that of all governments, those are the best, which, by the natural effect of their constitutions, are frequently renewed or drawn back to their first principles.”

–James Wilson, Lectures on Law, 1791

It may be time to draw this government back to our first principles.

Wednesday!

August 7th, 2013 . by Cary

I like the middle of the week. Halfway to the weekend, and I get to take a break and spend time in fellowship with my church family. Can’t beat that, really.

Hope your Wednesday is going well, also. I’l leave you with this:

“Cherish, therefore, the spirit of our people, and keep alive their attention. Do not be too severe upon their errors, but reclaim them by enlightening them. If once they become inattentive to the public affairs, you and I, and Congress, and Assemblies, Judges, and Governors, shall all become wolves.”

Separation of Powers

August 1st, 2013 . by Cary

In spite of what many may think, there is no clause regarding the separation of church and state in the founding documents. In supporting documents, Thomas Jefferson and many others have expounded on the importance of not allowing religion to take over the administration of the country, but in the founding documents themselves it merely says that the government shall not create or promote on religion over another.

In other sections, the importance of having separate areas of power, or responsibility, is also expounded at length. Which brings us to today’s quote:

“In the first place, it is to be remembered, that the general government is not to be charged with the whole power of making and administering laws: its jurisdiction is limited to certain enumerated objects, which concern all the members of the republic, but which are not to be attained by the separate provisions of any.”

–James Madison, Federalist No. 14, 1787

Yeah, We Know His Character

July 31st, 2013 . by Cary

“Liberty cannot be preserved without a general knowledge among the people, who have a right, from the frame of their nature, to knowledge, as their great Creator, who does nothing in vain, has given them understandings, and a desire to know; but besides this, they have a right, an indisputable, unalienable, indefeasible, divine right to that most dreaded and envied kind of knowledge; I mean, of the characters and conduct of their rulers.”

–John Adams, Dissertation on Canon and Feudal Law, 1765
