Sunday Quick Take

August 22nd, 2010 . by Cary

Ecclesiastes 10:2 (NIV): “The heart of the wise inclines to the right, but the heart of the fool to the left.”

Ecclesiastes 10:2 (NKJ): “A wise man’s heart is at his right hand, but a fool’s heart at his left.”

Remember, in the time this verse was written, the left was considered the evil side, while the right was considered righteous and true.

Funny, isn’t it, how much truth is in the old book that the progressives continue to try to tear down and decry as full of misleading and false teachings?

Inevitable

July 11th, 2010 . by Cary

Of course – I knew mine were making a little noise first thing in the morning, and then behaving the rest of the day. Now that I’ve fixed hers, mine are all jealous and are starting to really whine for attention. Maybe if I stay up late tonight, after finishing a little wood working that I should have had finished a week ago…

Lazy Sunday Afternoon

May 23rd, 2010 . by Cary

Well, I didn’t get as far along today as I thought I would. I’ll explain why in a minute; suffice it to say that when certain power tools don’t cooperate, certain tasks take a lot longer than normal.

First off, I need to apologize if you got the impression that I had no milling mistakes on Friday.

This is a result of the blind kerf I was cutting for the spline. I had a momentary lapse, the board lifted and came down away from the fence, and the result is as you see here – a short section of “oopsie” that needs to be fixed.

First step – putty. Putty or bondo is a woodworker’s best friend when it comes to paint grade projects. Fill the hole (slight overfill for shrinkage, since it’s acetone-based putty) and let it dry. Sand, and repeat.

End result – nice smooth wood, ready for primer. First, though, a thorough sanding of the rest of the frame, after removing the excess material from the plugs.

This is called a Japanese Flush Cut saw. One of the niftiest little hand saws ever invented, many hundreds of years ago, by the Japanese. The blade is flexible, so you can use the surrounding material as a guide while cutting off the pegs that are sitting above the surface. Works good, too:

Well, most of the time it works good.

So, glue the piece back in, let it dry, and finish sawing it off.

Well, the oak is harder than the poplar, and I am damaging the poplar more than I want to when the oak is being cut off. Time to save time and embrace 20th century technology. I picked this up at a friend’s garage sale a few years back, and it works quite well. Well, until the all the magic smoke leaks out.

And that is the delay factor I hadn’t counted on. When Mr. Belt Sander gave up the ghost, I had to resort to hand sanding the rest of the frames – both sides, and all edges. I got that finished, and now it’s time to run over to the sister-in-law’s house to visit the niece. She’s in town (she lives in Michigan) and she wanted to make this trip before her baby was born.

Friday, I’ll be priming the frames and once they are dry, I’ll be installing hardware and screen material. See you then.

Mark My Words

May 2nd, 2010 . by Cary

This oil rig disaster in the Gulf of Mexico is going to be used, somehow, by the leftists, the environazis, and the MSM as reason to keep the US from drilling it’s own oil. Mark my words.

Arizona’s SB 1070 and related legislation will be denounced, trounced, and contrived as unconstitutional by the leftists, the presidential administration, and the amnesia-prone Napolitano, resulting in even more border issues and more unrest by illegals. Mark my words.

I don’t know what is going to happen in the future, except that in the long run God wins. No matter how many battles are fought, God wins. I do know that because of inaction at the Federal level, the state of Arizona has had to take a drastic step to protect the interests of the LEGAL citizens and LEGAL immigrants. Having state leaders call for boycotts of the state they “represent” is reprehensible. I don’t know if SB 1070 is going to work, but I do know that it is the voice of the majority in this state demanding that something be done. I don’t know if it was the right thing, but it was done. Now, we deal with the aftermath, including unrest and discord between friends; miscommunications, hurt feelings, and possibly even broken friendships. We’ll see.

Whew!

April 25th, 2010 . by Cary

OK – so since I posted on Friday, there have been some changes around here. Quick note, first, to those with the “ru” and “pl” domains – you will never be registered as a user, and your spam comments don’t get past WP Spam, so give it up already.

Saturday morning, with the power booster in the hands of a trusted and capable friend, I headed off to play a gig at the feeding of the homeless at Crossroads United Methodist Church, put on by Prodigal’s Home. Doc Mike had the lead, Mike Beem backed him up, Brenda tickled the ivories, and I just tried to keep up with the bass. Then, since the new power booster was scheduled to be in, instead of going to the usual music fellowship, I went home to wait for the part to come in so I could a)get the road rhino back on it’s feet and 2) give TMBWitW her car back so she could run out and buy a birthday present for the birthday party later in the afternoon. While waiting for the part to show up, I went ahead and shingled the porch roof on MEG’s new doll house.

Once the power booster was here, Harry helped me get it installed and we bled the system. By this time, I had to grab a shower and get changed for my second interview. (I would like to apologize at this point for NOT keeping everyone updated as to the number of first interviews, possibilities, applications, and searching I’ve been doing – dwelling on the time involved for all the dead ends tends to make one depressed considering the lack of returns) Road rhino buttoned up, a big hug for Harry, and we departed – he was headed to his house, and I was headed for Scottsdale. Our route was pretty much the same for the first while or so, which was a good thing. About 15th Ave and Bethany Home the brakes decided not to release anymore. I forced the rhino onto a side street, and Harry pulled in behind me. No tools, headed for an interview, what to do? Naturally, Harry gave me a ride to the interview. After, we went by his house, got some tools, and headed back to the rhino. Not enough tools, as it turns out, so we had to run to my house where I changed out of interview clothes and into jeans again and grabbed more tools. Back to the rhino, fixed the issue (so we thought) and he was off to his place for a family dinner and I was off to the birthday party – a little late.

Just as I pulled up at the party, the brakes locked up again. Briefly: party, party, party, fixed the brakes again. I avoided using the brakes on the way home (try THAT in Phoenix sometime!) but they still locked up by the time I got home. After church today, I’ll be pulling the whole thing apart and starting all over again, double checking the specs before putting everything back together again.

Hope you all have had a wonderful weekend and hope to chat with you all real soon.

Oh – what’s that? How did the second interview go?

Pretty well – I was offered the position. I start Tuesday morning as the new store manager for Kidstop Toys. Greybeard, you can stop worrying about me in a cab! WOO HOOO!!!
