“In Flander’s Fields” was composed by Lt Col (Dr) John McCrae on this date in 1915 as he stood over the grave of a fellow officer at Ypres.
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
Every year, the VFW Ladies Auxiliary sells paper poppies. Dad would always buy one or two, hanging them from his rear-view mirror in whatever vehicle he was driving. I have tried to keep that tradition going, although this year I have yet to see a paper poppy being offered anywhere, and last year’s poppy is getting sun-bleached in the windshield of the Road Rhino.

When it gets right down to it, I’m the one who thought he didn’t need hearing protection all the time. Just when it was going to be louder than normal, right? Certainly not while waiting my turn on the rifle or pistol range. Certainly not while walking through the shop – not if I wasn’t the one operating the tools, right?
When it gets right down to it, it’s my own fault that the tinnitus is SO FREAKIN’ LOUD that I can’t even get to sleep because of it …
Well, I get to serve as a bad example. I could tour factories and military posts and say “Boys and girls, use your hearing protection. If you don’t, you will grow up to be just like me. Deaf, tired, and grumpy because you look back and realize you could have avoided the same fate.”
grump, grump, grump …

Obama(THHO)’s lap-dog (no, not the media!) Janet Napolitano actually said something that struck me as a possible light in the otherwise pitch darkness of liberal thoughts:
“… the plain fact of the matter is, having a child in and of itself does not bestow citizenship.”

Wow. Plain, unadulterated common sense. How the heck did that slip out?
She was referring, of course, to the terrible tragedy of criminal illegal immigrant parents being deported, even though they have US-citizenship children – anchor babies. There is a whole lot of hand-wringing going on with the fact that these parents are being deported (as they should be) and the poor children are being left behind.
Let’s face facts here: If the parents weren’t criminally involved, they would not have enough of a profile to be deported. The law enforcement of this country simply will not (with the exception of Arpaio and a few like-minded sheriffs) make a concentrated effort to deport those who are here illegally. However, once you are in the criminal system, and your immigration status is confirmed, buh-bye. And as for the children you have given birth to while you were here, hoping to use them as anchors that would keep you here? Well, we don’t want to be accused of breaking up the family unit, so how’s about we send your kids with you?
There, I fixed it.

Yesterday was kinda busy for me – it was, after all, my day off, so all I managed to do was get to the chiropractor, give blood, take our “new” black lab to the vet, spend time with my daughter, and go to Fellowship where we played live again. The time spent with those we love …
I was thinking about something all day yesterday, but never got time to mention it. Yesterday would have been Dad’s 84th birthday. He passed away on their 42rd anniversary, in 1992. The morbid among us (me, mostly) constantly re-figure how long I have to enjoy my family. We’ll see.
Earl Scruggs passed away yesterday at the age of 88. Porter Wagoner once said that Earl Scruggs was to the five string banjo what Babe Ruth was to baseball. I have to disagree. Babe Ruth was just playing a game. Bluegrass is serious business.
What I didn’t get accomplished yesterday will have to wait until Sunday afternoon. Cleaning up the back yard, cleaning up the side yard, cleaning the garage … the garage keeps getting put at the bottom of the list. As long as TMBWitW can park on her side of my shop the garage, all is well.

Stuffed #1 – my nose. I lay down, it starts draining, and I sit up. It stuffs back up. Lather, rinse, repeat.
Stuffed #2 – Obama(THHO) has not gotten enough kool-aid drinkers to buy the overabundance of Volts, so now he’s authorized a $10,000 per vehicle TAX SUBSIDY to get people to buy this piece of crap. I won’t buy one, but I have to donate more of my hard earned money so some environazi who is math challenged can drive in an electric car that costs more to run than a comparable gas vehicle? Thanks, Obama. Thanks a lot. Now, quit helping, you’re killing us.
