Absentee Friday – Still Red

June 26th, 2009 . by Cary

Along with me driving a cab on Fridays (and Saturdays), TMBWitW has changed her work-from-home day to Fridays to better cover child care and pet companionship. MEG will still be going to an aunt for the morning, but will be coming home sooner so she and Mommy can start the weekend sooner…

Meanwhile, I continue to look for a full time, paying gig. Please keep me in your prayers and if you know of an opening in the Phoenix Metro area, please let me know.

So, Where Ya Been?

June 23rd, 2009 . by Cary

No, I didn’t really get abducted by aliens for my sexiness and good looks.

I have, however, been dealing with slight depression (still no prospects for a full-time J O B) and today I have the additional duty of taking Bradley back to Friends 4 Life.

Who is Bradley, you ask? He’s a very sweet, almost two year old retriever mix that gets along great with everybody, and really loves cats – especially with a side of ranch dressing for dipping.

Bradley Tug Of WarGood SitBradley Relaxes

That part about liking cats? Yeah – that’s the problem. Since we have five, it’s not fair to them to keep them cooped up in their room when they are accustomed to having free reign of the entire house. Cat training Bradley is beyond our means right now. We had started to kennel train him, but he is already housebroken and what was thought to be separation anxiety is more likely confinement anxiety. We know this because he chewed up the plastic tray liner that came with the kennel, folded the aluminum replacement tray like a piece of paper, and then chewed the bottom panel of the kennel apart to get out. Yes, he “tunneled” out of the crate. It was a good sturdy wire one, too – it managed to keep Sara contained as long as we were training her, and she’s no lightweight.

So, long story longer, Bradley is going back to the wonderful folks at Friends 4 Life so he can get an even better home next time around.

TMBWitW is really torn up about this – she managed to get very, very attached to this boy very quickly. I think she still misses Logan more than I imagined. Don’t get me wrong – I still miss Logan terribly, and have even called Bradley “Logan” a few times – but I am a Marine, and Marines don’t show emotion unless the Flag is involved.

We are going to go back to the plan of loving the furkids we have and keeping the numbers at about half of what they are now, eventually.

Well, it’s almost time to get loaded up. I’ll let you know how well it goes.

UPDATE: pretty darn smoothly. Bradley was just happy to be going for a car ride, and when he got to the shelter he jumped right out and figured Erika knew where he belonged. I’m gonna miss him.

Pictures As Promised

May 28th, 2009 . by Cary

Last week the project was a Ramada for the patio area outside the “gameroom” at the church. These pictures were taken the day of a wedding, so there are some spiffy lookin’ dudes hanging out:

Ramada

Had to stitch that one together from several ground-level shots, so the truss looks a little weird.

Here’s a detail shot of the inside corner:

Yesterday, TMBWitW took a day of vacation, went running around with MEG and came home to a shade structure of our own:

Thursday Round-Up

April 16th, 2009 . by Cary

Before I get into a review of the blogs that I follow, let me say two things. First, yes, I am a charter member of the Domestic Terrorist Bloggers Network, but I am not a “terrorist” except in my own government’s eyes. And second, yesterday was “tax day” but it was also “tea party” day. There were eighteen listed events in the state of Arizona, with the largest being the gathering here at the capitol building in Phoenix. The paper says there were about 5,000 protesters in attendance; actual estimates put the number much, much higher, by at least a factor of three, but then the crowd wasn’t full of illegal immigrants demanding rights or lefties demanding money, so the estimators got thrown off. Obama and his Dem minions were not the only ones being protested; here in Arizona the governor, Jan Brewer (R), is planning on increasing taxes to cover the one BILLION dollar budget shortfall.

When TMBWitW and I run into a budget shortfall, we cut back on spending. Being simple minded, non-economic types, and certainly without years of experience in running a country (into the ground), we didn’t realize you could actually spend MORE than you BROUGHT IN and still call it good. We always thought that would eventually land you in the poor house, but hey – we don’t have Ivy-league educations, either. Oh, and we pay our taxes. Unlike certain cabinet appointees.

Were you aware that if you worked for the IRS and you tried to Geithner your return, you would be fired without ability to appeal? Don’t believe me? Check out the story in the April 15, 2009 Chicago Tribune: IRS workers see double standard on tax errors. Nothing to see there, folks – just the same double standard as always…

OK – Let’s get off the blood-pressure raising stuff and on to the reason you stopped in on this fine Thursday morning:

Just wear red and show your patriotism, okay? Don’t make me come over there and add black and blue to your palette today!

OK, so I’m not as stiff and sore as I was yesterday, but this metal splinter in the tip of my right middle finger sure makes typing harder than it was. If only I had a super-powerful magnet that would just pull the splinter out, instead of having to dig around in there trying to get it…

As promised, some “before” and “after” shots for you:

Since it is Good Friday, TMBWitW is off work and we are going to spend the day together – as soon as she wakes up. MEG has been up and down a few times, and my sleep schedule is so whacked it’s not even funny. Tonight I’ll be driving a twelve hour shift – if anything amusing comes up, I will let you know.
