Weekend’s Over – Keep Working!

May 11th, 2009 . by Cary

The back-to-back 24 hour shifts driving cab can be tiring. I pretty much lose Sunday afternoon completely, what with laying down to take a nap after church and not getting up until well after supper time…

This morning I’m headed back over to the church – we’re in the home stretch now. The flooring is finished (see the picture below for a bad shot of the stage – I took it Sunday morning, with only one eye open) and now there is just baseboard to do. That should get accomplished today. If you click on the picture and zoom in, you will see a piece of the baseboard laying across the stage:

Stage is Finished!

Well, it’s off to get the morning stuff done before MEG wakes up (again!) and we head over to the church.

Busy Week

May 7th, 2009 . by Cary

I have been working at the church all week; I have not had the time nor the energy after putting in a day over there to do a lot of blog-reading. I apologize for that, to those I normally read, and to all of you for not posting a round-up today.

I do, however, have pictures!

Quick Look

On the dais section, I decided to go with a picture frame around the edges (i’ll be laying in the flooring for the stage today, so the finished product will be posted later):

After service last night, I took a panorama shot of the “gameroom”:

Sorry the panorama doesn’t translate well to this forum. If you would like, I can e-mail you a copy if you would like to see the whole thing in all it’s glory!

Every time pastor walks in the “gameroom” he says “Why do I have the urge to play basketball?” Well, it was funny the first time.

For those of you wondering – the engineered wood is bamboo flooring.

Not Your Usual Wednesday

May 6th, 2009 . by Cary

I’ve got two things to cover on this Wednesday morning. The first is sickening, and the second is just plain disturbing.

First up is a plan to legalize infanticide – that is, reduce the penalty for killing a child under the age of twelve months from capitol murder to a felony – in the state of Texas. Normally, Texas is a pretty stand-up place, but this is nuts. Read the story at Samantha Speaks and get more detail at Cassy Fiano‘s blog. If you live in the state of Texas, let them know how you feel.

The second item came to me just this morning via the American Family Association. Seems there is a bill afoot in the US Senate (S. 909) courtesy of that bastion of tolerance, Senator Kennedy, that would add sexual orientation to the list of protected classes. No, it’s not saying directly that sexual orientation shall be considered a protected class for all matters – but in the instance of so-called “hate crimes” the sexual orientation of the victim would make the slightest reaction to their perversion a federal crime. And, with all things done by this over-blown bureaucracy known as the leadership of this country, allowing sexual orientation to become a protected class would make outlaws of the rest of the citizens.

Think I’m kidding?

What would be your immediate reaction to a person of the male persuasion opening his clothing in front of you or your children? Smack him? Shoot him? Yell at him? Think bad thoughts about him?

You just committed a federal crime against a protected class.

Now – imagine how many criminals there would be if speaking against illogical or immoral sexual practices became a federal crime. OK, that’s a big number. Think about how many truly Christian churches (preaching the Word of God, and not a human misinterpretation of it) would be outlawed. Whoops – same number!

Think about how many children are hurt each year by sexual predators. The children would no longer be the victims – the predators are a protected class, so how could they possibly be guilty of doing what they are protected for?

The twist of logic employed by the liberal left to promote and legitimize sexual perversion is astounding. And all of this is led by Senator Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts. Mary Jo Kopechne was unavailable for comment.

New Soreness

May 5th, 2009 . by Cary

I hadn’t done flooring in a while. In fact, not since I did the tile in my own house, and that was mostly up-and-down, with very little strenuous activity, since most of the tiling went in without needing trimmed. Even the laminated wood flooring that went into our master bedroom and MEG’s room went pretty quick.

Engineered wood – now, there’s a different story. I’ve laid floors on wood sub-floors, and that was a case of nailing the slabs down. This was the first time I helped do a floating floor with 5/8″ engineered wood, and I gotta tell you that this morning my legs and my abs are screaming in agony. Up, down, then push the pieces into alignment so you can temporarily tape them until the glue dries… up, down, then push the pieces into alignment… you get the picture. At one point, there were three “crews” filling in the middle while one guy started the rows (using cut pieces to stagger the joints) and I finished off each row (cutting pieces to fit). We covered almost 1800 square feet of flooring in about six hours of hard labor yesterday:

Laying the Floor

Almost Finished

Today, we will be tackling the stage area. This should be challenging, as the edges will need a lot of custom cut pieces. I’ll have to discuss the feasibility of trying to make sure the floor planks and the stage planks align with one another – because chances are, they won’t – but I have a trick or two up my sleeve.

Oh, before I forget – a shot of the light fixtures:

Light Fixtures

Now, I need to dismount my table saw from the rolling base and load it onto the trailer so I have an edge on getting the pieces cut correctly for the stage.
