Busiest Unemployed Man Ever

May 4th, 2009 . by Cary

For being without a for-real, honest-to-goodness job, I sure seem to be busy.

Friday and Saturday I drove cab (two twenty-four hour shifts), Sunday morning was church, and I caught a three-hour nap on Sunday afternoon. That pretty much wiped out the weekend. This morning, I have a chiropractor appointment (Hi, Dr. Powell!) and then it’s back over to the church – time for the flooring in the new “gameroom.” I know, I promised pictures of the light fixtures (I only helped hang two of the five; two Fridays ago a crew hung the rest and this last Friday some more volunteers hung the blinds and started the flooring), but I’ve been a bit busy. At any rate, I will get pictures up soon covering the latest developments in the “gameroom.”

Gotta get going now – MEG needs to get up and get dressed (she woke up earlier, but wasn’t ready to get up, if you know what I mean) and then we will be running for the day.

Go on out there – wear red, make me proud! I’m driving cab today and tomorrow, so I’ll be offline – unless you have my cell number.

Not A Regular Thursday

April 30th, 2009 . by Cary

I was going to do a round up today – and got sidetracked by a job opening in my e-mail. The application process (online – whatever happened to “come on down, fill out an application, and we’ll talk!”?) consisted of several questions of the usual sort (what’s your name? do you have any aliases? where do you live? how long have you lived there? where have you worked before? do you do drugs? can we test you for them?) and then a timed questionnaire involving a set of questions, asked differently, 224 times.

Seriously!

Yes, I know that they are trying to get an idea of who you are by asking these questions, trying to “trip you up” perhaps, but do they really think people are going to answer truthfully if they are desperate for a job? While I am not desperate, I would never answer untruthfully. It’s not in my nature.

So – what are the questions, you wonder?

Questions like “Do you have family living in the area?” “Are you an honest person?” (snicker – ‘oh, yesss – very honest – just ask my parole officer!’) “Do you think safety is due to luck or diligence?” “Have you ever stolen anything?” (no, Diogenes – never in my life.) “Do you think everyone else is honest?”

They didn’t allow for essay answers. I don’t think they would have liked mine very much.

Well, do me a favor. Visit the fine folks over in the sidebar and tell them I said hello. I’ll be there too, but tell them I sent you anyway. Chances are, if you enjoy reading this stuff, you will really like the ones I’m linked to.

And one more thing – if you are so inclined – please pray for God to guide me in my career aspects. I appreciate it.

Yesterday’s Results

I did remember to actually use the camera I take along with me to jobs; this time I even took photos in process. The first project of the day was to build up a section of floor to be used as a dais, or stage, in the new gameroom:

Area where the stage will be

With 2×6 joists on edge, on 16″ centers, and 3/4″ (OK, it’s actually 23/32″) plywood, it was pretty fast going and the stage was built within an hour:

When the flooring is installed, the stage will be finished.

The next project was the ceiling line – you know, where the wall meets the ceiling. It was pretty plain:

BOH-ring!

Corner blocks in all four corners:

Starting in one corner and working all the way around the 2000 square foot room, the crown moulding went up quick and easy, with the help of one of the guys from church:

And the finished product:

Today, once the Pastor finishes some personal chores, we will be installing the rest of the light fixtures. Again, pictures to follow.

Monday Plans

April 27th, 2009 . by Cary

I had a good shift on Friday, no problems and kept busy most of the time so I was rather profitable. Not every day is that profitable, which means that I likely won’t be driving cab forever, but for now it is filling the gap.

Today, since the new building has a green tag, we start working on the finishing touches of the new “gameroom” at the church. I’ll take pictures and show you what I’m up to this week.
