Today’s Quotes 6/1/22

“So great is the wickedness of some men, and the stupid servility of others, that one would be almost inclined to conclude that communities cannot be free.” Samuel Adams (1787)

“Justice is the end of government. It is the end of civil society. It ever has been and ever will be pursued until it be obtained, or until liberty be lost in the pursuit.” —James Madison (1788)

“You need to understand what the veterans think when they hear the anthem or see the flag, and the cost they paid and their families. And if you truly understand that, I think it’s impossible not to salute the flag and listen to the anthem.” —Tony La Russa, Major League Baseball Manager (2022)

“Persecution for opinion is the master vice of society.” —Frances Wright (1795-1852)

“When the Founding Fathers wrote the Second Amendment, they had just finished a war to liberate themselves from tyranny. They didn’t just get back from a hunting trip. This is about your freedom.” —Congresswoman Lauren Boebert (2022)

“We have fathers who aren’t home. We have emasculated our men. Our children are at stake. You notice that these shooters, they have had family problems. The Parkland shooter — 37 times police were called to his home. It’s not the gun.” —Virginia Lt. Governor Winsome Sears (2022)

“The vague and ever-changing definition of ‘assault weapon’ is deliberately designed to slowly include all guns.” —Ian Haworth (2022)

“Giving up our rights increases everyone’s vulnerability. It’s the worst way to try and love your neighbor.” —Seth Dillon (2022)

“If, from the more wretched parts of the old world, we look at those which are in an advanced stage of improvement, we still find the greedy hand of government thrusting itself into every corner and crevice of industry, and grasping the spoil of the multitude.” —Thomas Paine (1791)

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police. Yet in their hearts there is unspoken — unspeakable! — fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts! Words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home, all the more powerful because they are forbidden. These terrify them. A little mouse — a little tiny mouse! — of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.” —Sir Winston Churchill (1874-1965)

“In an age where elites embrace defunding the police, when homelessness runs rampant, when gangs dominate entire communities, and when radical district attorneys refuse to prosecute violent crime in cities across America, rarely has the Second Amendment been more necessary to secure the rights of our fellow citizens.” —Senator Ted Cruz (2022)

“We must not react to evil and tragedy by abandoning the Constitution or infringing on the rights of our law-abiding citizens.” —Senator Ted Cruz (2022)

The Federalist Papers

September 24th, 2015 . by Cary

“In the first place it is to be remembered that the general government is not to be charged with the whole power of making and administering laws. Its jurisdiction is limited to certain enumerated objects, which concern all the members of the republic, but which are not to be attained by the separate provisions of any.” —James Madison, Federalist No. 14

Maybe He Was Onto Something …

August 22nd, 2013 . by Cary

Hmmmm …

“The instability of our laws is really an immense evil. I think it would be well to provide in our constitutions that there shall always be a twelve-month between the ingross-ing a bill & passing it: that it should then be offered to its passage without changing a word: and that if circum-stances should be thought to require a speedier passage, it should take two thirds of both houses instead of a bare majority.”

–Thomas Jefferson, Letter to James Madison, 1787

Separation of Powers

August 1st, 2013 . by Cary

In spite of what many may think, there is no clause regarding the separation of church and state in the founding documents. In supporting documents, Thomas Jefferson and many others have expounded on the importance of not allowing religion to take over the administration of the country, but in the founding documents themselves it merely says that the government shall not create or promote on religion over another.

In other sections, the importance of having separate areas of power, or responsibility, is also expounded at length. Which brings us to today’s quote:

“In the first place, it is to be remembered, that the general government is not to be charged with the whole power of making and administering laws: its jurisdiction is limited to certain enumerated objects, which concern all the members of the republic, but which are not to be attained by the separate provisions of any.”

–James Madison, Federalist No. 14, 1787
