418. WILLIAM H. HANFORD - Oldest son of Justice David Kellogg (328) and Nancy (Hanford) Cartter - b. 7-29-1838 - d. 11-13-1904 - m. Lilah Villar 5-22-1864

William was trained as a physician and surgeon in Heidelberg, Germany and interned at Bellview Hospital in New York City. He served as a medical officer attached to the Navy on board the USS Hartford with Farragut. (originally, this was listed as serving on the Farragut, however, the Navy does not name ships after active service personnel.) Later he practiced at Cleveland, Ohio - then moved to Cottonwood Falls in Kansas in about 1874. Here he inherited over 6000 acres of land and accumulated more. He and his father established the Cartter Ranch which became quite a center for Republican activities. He served some time in the State Legislature.
