328. DAVID KELLOGG - Third son of David Kellogg (205) and Elizabeth (Hollister) Cartter - b. 6-22-1812 - d. 4-16-1887 m. Nancy H. Hanford 1836

As a sixteen year old boy David served as an apprentice in the printing office of Thurlow Weed while reading law. At age of 20 he was admitted to the bar and started practice of law in Rochester, N.Y. Later he moved to Massilon in Stark Co., Ohio and was the key delegate at the first Republican convention to secure Lincoln's nomination for president. He served as minister to Bolivia and in 1863 was appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Disctrict of Columbia. A close friend of Lincoln and succeeding presidents, he remained as Justice until his death in 1887. He became interested in Kansas grazing land and accumulated a large acreage during his life in Chase Co., near Cotonwood Falls where an extensive ranch was established by his son William.

419. David Kellogg Cartter - b. 6-2-1841 - d. 8-12-1862 - Died of Scarlet Fever during the Civil War while garrisoned at Ft. Scott, Kansas. He was a Lieutenant in the 2nd Ohio Cavlary. n.m.
