This Nehemiah appears in the genealogical line of the Carters tracing back to Rev. Thomas Carter by way of Rev. Samuel (2), Samuel (12), and through their Lancaster, Mass. descendents. Genealogists fail to agree or be definite about this direct ancestry, but most recognize a close relationship to Nathaniel (15). (Note: original manuscript has this Nathanial identified as #25, but #25 is Abigal Carter b. 3-18-1692 - based on the record of reversed and mis-written numbers in the rest of the book, I believe that Grandpa meant 15)
A possibility exists that Nehemiah could have been a son of Nathaniel, next younger than the twins, who were born 5-10-1741. However all other children are found referred to in church records. He is not.
In Cutter and Adams Genealogical and Personal Memoirs of Mass. V. II is found this statement:
"Nehemiah, probably nephew of Nathaniel."
In Wm. Cutter's Genealogy of Northern New York Vol. III we find this reference on page 1134:
"Nehemiah, son of Nathaniel Carter (Note: corrected spelling) (according to the family historian) was born Oct. 15, 1742 - d. 10-15-1810. Others give him as descendant of John and Sarah (Smith) Carter of Springfield, Mass. Sarah was daughter of Ebenezer Smith of Suffield, Mass."
